Description

My entry for :iconthemustangproject:'s contest to save the wild horses from the abuse of their supposed protectors, BLM.

This was mostly done pre-tablet, and I am quite happy with it. Somehow the paint in front got blurred, though... >.<

My Letter:
Dear Mr. President,

When one thinks about the history of the United States, one comes to realize how important the American mustang has been to the development of this great nation. Descendants of the escaped Spanish horses, and later horses from other origins, have wandered the land of the wild and free West and have become a key figure in the culture of America. The Native Americans befriended these magnificent creatures and from then on the two groups, mustang and Native Americans. Together they went into battle and out on hunts. The legendary cowboys tamed mustangs to use in herding and wrangling their cattle. The mustangs have become an unofficial symbol of America and her ideals, second only to the bald eagle, representing freedom, power, and strength, three ideals that have shaped the way this country has developed.

I’m sorry to say that under your administration it has become obvious that the welfare of wildlife has come second to that of greedy ranchers, mainly in the circumstance of the Grey Wolf, which was removed from the Endangered Species list, taking them out of government protection with population numbers that were still insufficient to completely withdraw all protection. In several states after this happened a wolf hunting season was planned and even with all the protests nothing has happened to take them back into protection. Several carnivore hunting carnivals have been planned and soon the government will be forced to bring these creatures back into protection if their extinction in the wild is to be prevented.

But now is your chance to create a better reputation for your administration’s treatment of wild animals. Currently the Bureau of Land Management is rounding up the wild mustangs “for their own good” into pens where the horses are suffering and death tolls are at a sharp, ever constant incline. Mares are having late-term abortions die to high levels of stress and many other factors not present at such highs as the pens. The mustangs who are not adopted in a short period are scheduled for euthanasia, the politically correct word for murdering an innocent. Why is this happening, you wonder? Because livestock owners would like to have their land. Everyone says that history repeats itself, and that is clearly what is happening right now. This situation has parallels to that of the Native Americans. The horses are being taken from their promised lands for the simple and lacking excuse that the ranchers and farmers need lands. The only difference it seems is that the mustangs do not have a voice to protest this treatment with.

Right now an opportunity to not repeat several dark periods in American history is present. The only thing needed is for someone in a position of power to step in and do what is right. Don't let the eminent genocide happen- "All that is needed for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing."

This is wonderful! I love Mustangs and I hate to see what the government is doing to them; the same government that was appointed to protect them.

Have you seen my website before? It has a lot of information on wild Mustangs on it. savethemustanghorses.blogspot.…
